Liposuction is a procedure that can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas that have not responded to diet and exercise. The surgery works by removing fat from under the skin in areas such as the chin and neck, upper arms, abdomen, buttocks, thighs, knees, calves and ankles. The male chest is also a common area for treatment.
What is involved?Surgery is generally carried out as day surgery and many treatments can be performed under local anaesthetic. The surgeon makes a small incision and a solution is passed into the treatment area through a fine tube. This solution helps to break down the fat cells which are then removed with suction. Through the incision, a narrow tube (cannula) is inserted and used to vacuum the fat layer that lies deep beneath the skin. The cannula is pushed then pulled through the fat layer, breaking up the fat cells and suctioning them out by a vacuum pump or a large syringe. The incision sites will be carefully chosen so that scarring is as inconspicuous as possible. Bruising and swelling can be present for 2-4 weeks dependent upon the quantity of fat that is removed and the patient’s own healing rate. Any discomfort or pain can be relieved by painkillers and gentle walking. A supportive elastic will be worn day and night for 3 weeks and after that for a further 3 weeks during the day. Scars will be small and will fade in time, and you will have follow-up visits in the months after surgery to check on your progress
How long will it take to recover? You can expect to experience some bruising and swelling that should subside after one or two weeks. You can return to work within a few days. If you are fit and healthy your liposuction will be more effective and longer-lasting. It is recommended to regularly massage the treated area to help the healing process and to wear an elastic garment for up to 8 weeks.
