Dehydrated Skin

Skin is made up of about 70% water; the epidermis of the skin retains about 20% – 30% of that water. The hydrolipidic film is a barrier against germs and keeps the moisture within your skin. However, if this film gets damaged in some way the skin can become dehydrated and the skin suffers from a lack of water. The pores of the skin can either be large or small but the skin will feel tight and will start to absorb moisture really quickly. Sufferers find that their makeup won’t stay on or will go patchy as the skin tries to soak in the water contained in foundations. Blackheads and spots can still be a problem for people with dry skin, although their overall complexion may be ashen and dull.

Aging is one of the main causes of dehydrated skin, whether that is premature or extrinsic aging. Naturally the skin’s hydration’ decrease over time as does the activity of the sebaceous gland. Blood flow to the skin will also decline and this causes a drop in sebum production. The weather, both extreme cold and heat also cause the skin to dry out and water to evaporate from the skin.

Diet and lifestyle are also a problem and we often deprive ourselves of skin-friendly Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) in the name of a healthy fat-free diet. The result of this can be chronic dryness, itchiness, scaling and thinning. Alcohol and medications can also aggravate the condition. Dehydrated skin also tends to be more sensitive and can be further aggravated by certain cosmetics.
