Unwanted Body Hair
Both men and women can suffer from unwanted body hair. Some men dislike the body hair they have on their chests and others suffer from body hair on their backs, which can make them self-conscious on holiday or in the swimming pool.
Unwanted Body Hair
For women, unwanted body hair can have an even more psychologically disturbing presence and cause anxiety and depression. Unwanted body hair in women more often appears on the face around the chin and upper lip areas. Although some women choose to pluck, bleach or shave the unwanted hairs, this is only a temporary solution that can often make it worse and even encourage ingrown hairs in some people.
Excessive Body Hair
The exact causes of excessive and unwanted body hair are unknown. In women, the condition is called hirsutism and is hereditary. It is often caused by a hormonal imbalance and in some cases is a sign of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Women with hirsutism often have higher levels of male hormones present. Prescription medicines and steroids may cause unwanted hair growth.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Overview
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that affects millions of women. There are some main characteristics of the condition and these include ovarian cysts. This is when your ovaries do not regularly release eggs due to high levels of testosterone/androgens in your body. When two or more of the features are apparent then the likely diagnosis is PCOS.
Some other symptoms that indicate the presence of PCOS include irregular or no periods, difficulty in getting pregnant due to the irregularity of your periods, weight gain, oily skin and acne as well as excessive hair on the face and body.
The exact cause of PCOS is unknown but it can often be hereditary and runs in families. Other suspected causes include resistance to insulin which is the hormone responsible for moving glucose from the blood into the cells. If the body is resistant to the insulin it often has to produce more and elevated levels of insulin which will result in over-production of testosterone in the ovaries, leading to many of the symptoms of PCOS including weight gain and excess body hair. Other hormonal imbalances can also cause PCOS and other hormone imbalances are the reason that women experience such differing symptoms. High levels of prolactin, the hormone that helps the glands produce breast milk, low levels of the sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), which reduces the effects of testosterone and high levels of luteinising hormone (LH) that stimulate ovulation have all been found to be imbalanced in women with PCOS.
In men, unwanted hair growth tends to be genetic and is often an indicator of higher levels of testosterone in the system.
