A subcutaneous layer of fat that sits under the skin and on top of that is the fascia layer which overlies the muscle. It pushes the fat through the connective tissue creating a sucked in dimple effect.

E

Also known as an otoplasty or pinnaplasty. It’s usually done on children and young teenagers, although adults can also have it done.

Elastin is a protein that gives the skin elasticity, allowing it to stretch and contract after movement. Skin with a higher amount of elasticity will snap back quicker.

A new technology, patented carrier solution which restrains the activity of the acid until it is absorbed. It releases the acid’s protons at a higher skin water content so they accelerate through the skin, separating cells in a ‘cleaner’ quicker way.

The surface layer of the skin.

Physical activity undertaken as a regular regime to improve ones own wellness and wellbeing in order to lead a healthy lifestyle.

With aging, the tissues around your eyes, including some of the muscles supporting your eyelids, weaken.

Also called a blepharoplasty, reduces bagginess from lower eyelids and removes excess skin from the upper eyelids.

A focused beam of light that has been dispersed inorder to effectively treat the skin at the required frequency.

Free radical damage is caused by lifestyle choices and external forces like consumption of fried foods, alcohol, tobacco, and exposure to pesticides, pollution etc. This results in oxidation, and accelerates the speed of ageing.

In general anaesthesia, you’re put to sleep during the operation. You’re unconscious , and unaware of pain.

A surgical procedure also known as a chin implant. Along with the nose the chin area can balance the face proportionally

Glutathione is the body’s most powerful antioxidant and detoxifying agent, made up of three amino acids, produced in the body

H

Hyaluronic acid boosts skin hydration and has the ability to hold up to 30 x its weight in water.

I

Made from a purified protein are applied under the skin, temporarily reducing the action of the targeted muscles and preventing them from moving. As a result, lines and wrinkles in the skin are softened, giving you a younger, fresher-looking appearance.

A natural occurrence for both men and women where the nipple appears to go in rather than point outwards.

Isotretinoin is an effective treatment for severe and cystic acne.

Intravenous vitamins are injected directly into the blood supply in order to combat a wide variety of conditions.

J

Made up of 3 peeling agents at 14% each that work together: Salicylic acid, Lactic acid and Resocinol. This peel dissolves dirt and sebum to prevent acne outbreaks.

K

A structural protein that makes up hair and nails.

L

Lidocaine is a topical numbing anaesthetic that you apply or inject into the treatment area to block and numb pain.

A surgical procedure that shortens the area between the nose and the lips, creating the effect of having larger fuller lips.

A rare genetic disorder where fat cells simply waste away. It is a progressive disorder that means patients can prematurely age and it is hereditary.

An ultrasound procedure that causes fat to heat up and then cells to rupture causing them to die and the body disposes of the waste naturally via urination.

A cosmetic procedure to remove small areas of unwanted body fat. It is performed on areas of the body that are prone to fat deposit build-ups.

M

Melanin is a pigment that changes skin colour. It can protect you from UV damage and is also responsible for tanning the skin. Sometimes, it disperses unevenly.

Melanocytes are melanin-producing cells. Melanin is a dark pigment responsible for skin color.

A procedure utilising small needles to prick the skin and “trick” the body in generating new collage and skin tissue for smoother, firmer, more toned skin.

Benign (non cancerous) lesions can simply be left alone. However if your mole bothers you in any way your consultant may recommend removal (excision).

A catch-phrase that refers to a combination of procedures including a breast uplift, liposuction and a tummy tuck sometimes with a breast implant too.

Common name for a dorsal hump which is cartilage and bone irregularities on the nose. These can either manifest in a bump or hump shape interrupting the outline of a person’s nose.

It is a surgery to reduce the look of sagging skin in the neck area and restore a more youthful appearance to the neck.

A method of procedure that is minimally invasive and doesn’t require a local or general anaesthesia or an overnight stay in a hospital.

A colloquial term to describe a rhinoplasty procedure this can be done either surgically or non-surgically. Dr Alexandrides is a top rhinoplasty surgeon.

O

The most acne prone skin type with open pores, a shiny complexion, blackhead and pimples. The oil production is stimulated by hormones.

Oestrogen is a female sex hormone, and while it is present in both men and women, it effects women’s bodies more.

P

Abnormal densities of melanin deposits that group together to create an uneven complexion, there are a number of treatments on offer that we can offer to improve the look of this.

The group term applied to a number of cosmetic procedures performed by a plastic surgeon.

Polly beak deformity is a name that surgeons use to describe Supratip Fullness that can occur following a Rhinoplasty procedure.

polycystic ovary syndrome affects how a woman’s ovaries work. The syndrome can cause hormonal imbalances and metabolism problems.

Progesterone is a female sex hormone that is involved in the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. Progesterone can have a depressing effect on the brain.

It is one of most common conditions that we treat as plastic surgeons. It can happen anywhere on the body that can sag or droop from ageing.

R

A systematic plan for skincare, for many this will include the following steps: cleansing, toning, protecting, moisturising and utilising SPF throughout the day.

Plastic surgery on the nose, known familiarly as a nose job. It is a facial cosmetic procedure that is usually performed to enhance the appearance of the nose shape.

With any procedures there are dangers where things will not work out as predicted. One must weigh up the pros and cons for treatment.

A condition in which certain facial blood vessels enlarge, giving the cheeks and nose a flushed appearance.

S

This occurs when internal or external factors affect the key molecules that help keep the skin elastic, firm, and hydrated.

They are filled with sterile salt water. They’re inserted empty, and then filled once they’re in place. They are commonly used in the the breast area.

Similar to “cankles” but on the upper limbs where the fat deposits make it hard to define the upper and lower arms.

An organisation that aims to connect patients with the best non-surgical cosmetic practitioners. They set out safe impartial guidelines.

A gland in the skin that opens into a hair follicle to allow the excretion of oils or wax (sebum). When sebaceous glands produce too much sebum, they can block and plug the follicle, creating a whitehead or blackhead.

Sebaceous hyperplasia are benign (not harmful) bumps on the skin. They’re usually small yellow/white bumps around 3mm. They’re often seen on the forehead and cheeks and occur when the sebaceous glands become trapped with oil or debris.

A regime of products that can be applied to your skin in order to correct or maintain its appearance. We have our own range called 111SKIN.

Small damaged veins that can appear on the surface of the legs or face. They are usually not painful or harmful, but some people may wish to treat them for cosmetic reasons.

Irregular lines or streaks on the skin where it has been stretched or distended, especially due to pregnancy or obesity.

Spectrum changes observed on the skin that directly results from exposure and overexposure to sun and UV light.

T

It is a technology that uses heating and cooling to tighten skin and reduce wrinkles. It can also help to tighten, lift and contour.

The common term for an abdominoplasty which is a surgical procedure that is designed to remove the excess skin that develops around the stomach as a result of weight gain.

Tinea versicolor are areas of pigmentation of the skin that are usually small and discoloured. They can be light or dark and appear most often on the chest and shoulders. They’re a fungal infection.

U

Fine lines that form under the ocular socket that occur with ageing they can be rectified with botox / fillers as well as some laser treatments.

V

Organic compounds which are essential for normal growth and nutrition and are required in small quantities in the diet because they cannot be made by the body.

FDA-approved injectable added to the Juvéderm family of dermal fillers. This non-surgical lip augmentation treatment is designed to plump the lips and minimize the appearance of fine lines around the mouth, also known as perioral rhytids or perioral lines.

Vycross technology combines low and high molecular weight of hyaluronic acid which makes it particularly effective for moulding and shaping.

W

It is an increase in body weight. This can involve an increase in muscle mass, fat deposits, excess fluids such as water or other factors.

It is a decrease in body weight resulting from either voluntary (diet, exercise) or involuntary (illness) circumstances.
