Safe, professional removal of milia with careful assessment of the delicate skin around them.
Milia are small, firm cysts that form just beneath the skin’s surface. They contain keratin, a naturally occurring protein found in the skin, hair and nails.
Often referred to as milk spots, milia typically appear as tiny white, cream or yellowish bumps around 1 to 2mm in size. They are smooth, dome-shaped and firm, with no surrounding redness, inflammation, pain or itching, and often appear in small clusters. They are most common around the eyes, eyelids, upper cheeks, nose and forehead, where the skin is thinner, although they can develop elsewhere on the face or body.
Milia are harmless and are not a form of acne.
A whitehead is a closed comedone that forms when sebum and dead skin cells block a follicle, whereas milia are keratin-filled cysts with no conventional pore opening. This distinction matters: squeezing milia as though they were spots is unlikely to remove them and risks infection, inflammation, pigmentation and scarring. Some milia resolve naturally as the skin renews itself, but in adults persistent milia can remain for a long time and are difficult to shift with skincare alone.
At 111 Harley Street, we assess the area before treatment to confirm the bumps are milia, rule out other skin concerns that can look similar, and determine whether professional removal is appropriate for you.
