Skin Redness / Rosacea

Rosacea is a long-term inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the face. It commonly causes persistent redness, flushing, visible blood vessels, and increased skin sensitivity, although symptoms vary widely among individuals. It most often affects the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin.

Some people experience occasional flushing, while others develop persistent redness, burning or stinging sensations, or inflammatory bumps that can resemble acne, though rosacea and acne are different conditions requiring different approaches.

Rosacea can also affect the eyes, known as ocular rosacea, causing dryness, irritation and gritty sensations; painful eyes, blurred vision or light sensitivity need prompt medical attention.

In less common cases, the skin of the nose thickens and enlarges, a change called rhinophyma, which is more common in men and, contrary to a persistent myth, is not caused by alcohol. Redness may be harder to see on darker skin tones, but warmth, burning, sensitivity and texture changes can still be present. Importantly, not all facial redness is rosacea: dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, sun damage, irritation and visible vessels can look similar.

Rosacea cannot currently be cured, but its symptoms can often be controlled well.
