Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterised by excessive sweating beyond what the body requires for normal temperature regulation. Sweating itself is normal and essential: sweat glands release perspiration to cool the body in response to heat, activity and other stimuli.

With hyperhidrosis, sweating occurs excessively and sometimes without an obvious trigger, and it can interfere with everyday activities, clothing choices, work and social situations. The condition takes two broad forms.

Primary focal hyperhidrosis affects specific areas such as the underarms, palms, soles or face, is thought to involve overactive nerve signals stimulating the sweat glands, can run in families and often begins in childhood or adolescence.

Secondary hyperhidrosis is caused by another medical condition or medication, including menopause, an overactive thyroid, low blood sugar, certain infections and some neurological or metabolic conditions, and tends to cause more generalised sweating. This distinction matters: sweating that begins suddenly, occurs mainly at night, affects the whole body or is accompanied by unexplained symptoms such as weight loss or fever should be medically assessed before aesthetic treatment.
