The infamous breast lift, decoded…
Breast lifts are surprisingly common but rarely spotted. Not just because of the shrouded nature of the area, which is (almost always) covered, but because the procedure has gone through so many advanced iterations that it is now very difficult to spot a mastopexy.
Gone are the days of robust, round breasts touching a patients chin – breast lifts in the 2020’s are far more focused on reshaping the region to appear smooth, spirited and scar-free.
What is it?
Mastopexy, or a breast lift, is a surgical procedure which involves raising sagging breasts via lifting the nipple, removal of excess skin and/or with a breast implant.
1.Nipple Realignment (involving a ‘Doughnut’ or Periareolar Incision) :
2. Vertical and/or Horizontal Mastopexy Mastopexy (Tissue & Fat Removal)
3.Augmentation Mastopexy
Nipple Realignment
The most popular form of Mastopexy, this involves cutting around the nipple to then remove the fat and/or tissue, while simultaneously repositioning the nipple to sit above the IMF (the inframammary fold – the natural crease of the breasts lower boundary). The advantage of this form of mastopexy is that it leaves an almost indistinguishable scar and – duo to the reshaping of the areola – the most immediately visible difference.
Vertical/Horizontal Mastopexy
Often referred to as a Lollipop mastopexy, this surgery involves an incision from nipple to the base of the breast – and occasional an additional incision under the breast (resembling an inverted T all together). This is performed when nipple realignment is not necessary and there is a significant amount of tissue/fat to remove.
Augmentation Mastopexy
Known as an ‘Uplift’ Mastopexy, this procedure involves nipple repositioning, removal of excess skin and a breast implant. It is essentially a lift with implants.
Who is it right for?
The breasts, more so than many parts of the body, are subject to ageing. Besides gravity itself, the breasts can ‘droop’ significantly following breastfeeding or weight loss, losing both volume and definition simultaneously.
Can this be combined with breast implants?
Of course – this is what an Augmentation Mastopexy is. Many of our patients choose to do these procedures simultaneously due to their complementary nature. Dr Georgios encourages this option, particularly when there is a lack of volume, as a breast implant implements a shape and structure to the breast in a way that fat grafting is unable too.
How do I know what it will look like?
111 Harley St. is able to offer a 3D simulation of what your post-procedure results may look like using Crisalix technology. During this process, we will give projected images of your body with the combination of different sizes of implants and different degrees or any patterns of uplifts.
