How To Get Rid of A Double Chin

While the primary cause of excess lower facial fat is generally your body’s fat levels, ‘double chins’ can also be a caused by genetics. Here’s everything you need to know about our surgical and non-surgical options to tighten sagging skin.

Double chins can sometimes be improved on their own through exercise, diet and some effective jaw movements. But often, professional intervention is necessary. This is because sometimes you may have inherited a predisposition for accumulating stubborn fat beneath the chin or have, anatomically, a less prominent mandible (i.e receding chin), or your natural posture or even ageing – have created excess skin and fat can sink to the bottom of the jaw, creating a more prominent jowl and chin.

While facial exercises have become popular, there is little evidence to show their effect. Instead many patients are opting to ‘stretch out’ the area with cleverly injected jaw and chin fillers, elongating or widening the area to ‘draw out’ and diminish the appearance of a double chin.

If you’re happy with your appearance, so don’t necessarily what to alter your jawline’s existing shape with fillers, there are more options you can consider: Aqualyx, a type of non-surgical, fat dissolving injections, or Submental Liposuction, a surgical procedure to reduce a double chin.

“My preferred technique is to use a specially designed cannula. Using the tumescent technique where the first step to injecting the fat in that area with fluid that can restrict the loss of blood.
It makes the operation comfortable to be performed under local anaesthesia. During this procedure, I have two small entry points – one under the chin and one behind the ear, which allows me to cover the full area under the jaw, and not just the area under the chin, this gives better definition and better skin contraction. With this technique, I can create a very nice border of the jawline.”

Why is Submental Liposuction the supreme choice?

Submental Liposuction can dramatically reduce a double chin. It’s a minimally invasive, day case procedure, that reduces fat under the chin and redefines the lower face. It usually requires three small and well-concealed incisions that remain virtually undetectable to the naked eye.

Compared to Aqualyx that requires a course of treatments to give you optimal results, a one-time Submental Liposuction procedure is all it takes to lastingly re-establish your dream jawline (as long as you maintain within a reasonable range your pre-surgery weight).

    The surgery

Through a tiny incision, a narrow tube or cannula is inserted and used to vacuum the fat layer that lies deep beneath the skin. The cannula is pushed then pulled through the fat layer, breaking up the fat cells and suctioning them out. The cannula is attached to a vacuum source (or syringe, depending on your surgeon’s preference), which provides the suction needed to remove the fatty tissue. In some situations, a special cannula that emits ultrasonic energy to break down fatty deposits may be selected. This technique is known as ultrasonic liposuction – which is a lot less invasive than traditional liposuction.

Submental Liposuction can be performed in around 15-30 minutes and is often combined with a Facelift and other facial surgeries, for the best results.

How long does it take to see results?

After double chin surgery, the area may be swollen for a few weeks so it will be hard to see the true result until the chin has healed completely.

To accelerate this, so you can enjoy the results of your surgery faster, your first post-operative appointment will occur 7 days after your surgery, the day of which will be confirmed with our surgical team.

In our aftercare plans, we also encourage our patients to undergo lymphatic massage to mobilise your body’s fluids and diminish signs of swelling.

We also recommend after your surgery, you start gently massaging the area with your fingertip, in a  light kneading motion to the operated areas on the 1st day following surgery. Massage 15 minutes to each area twice daily for three weeks. Our Surgical Nurse will advise your further on this technique.
