Liposuction is a surgical method that removes fat cells from unwanted areas that deposit on the body such as the hips, tummy, back, thighs and buttocks. Fat can often be disproportionate, settling in places where it’s difficult to shift. Liposuction can be combined with other procedures such as a buttock fat transfer; in which the fat is taken from donor areas and then re-injected into the buttocks and hips to redefine the body shape.

Your surgeon will work with you to determine the best approach to liposuction to improve your overall body shape. Liposuction is suitable for treating many areas ranging from the more common areas to under the chin (double chin), on the thighs (thigh chafing), knees, back (bra rolls) and chest (gynecomastia). Ideally, it would help if you were as close as possible to your goal weight before considering liposuction. The operation can also be combined with a tummy tuck to optimise results and improve lax and weakened muscles. If your skin has good elasticity and your muscles are relatively toned, an abdominoplasty isn’t always required. However, many find that after losing weight, there is some degree of excess skin that remains, limiting the results of liposuction alone, which is why the two procedures are often combined. It can sometimes be part of a ‘mummy makeover’ where the surgeon will address pregnancy-related concerns with several combination procedures.⠀

    Liposuction FAQs

Here’s a few things you need to know and should consider before liposuction.

Depending on the technique of Liposuction, the surgeon will break the fat down fat using an ultrasound or laser cannula, which is a medical tool that is inserted under the skin through a small incision made on the treatment area. The cannula will help to break down the fat and turn it to liquid, this liquid is then removed using suction.

VASER Liposuction is usually the preferred approach as it offers a faster recovery time and allows the surgeon to precisely target the fat cells. This approach to liposuction gives more freedom and the capability to sculpt and contour the body to the patient’s preferences.

Liposuction reduces unwanted fat from the body and after the procedure, the body will continue to expel any liquified fat remaining and it will continue to function as it usually does.

Patients who are considering liposuction should be as close as possible to their ideal body weight, with enough fat to remove that has been resistant to diet and exercise. Those with a BMI above 35 should take note that there is a limit on procedures like Liposuction. The ideal candidate would have good skin elasticity and no visible signs of loose skin and be able to ‘pinch an inch’ of fat. Liposuction is not suitable for those who have a great deal of loose skin. Instead, they may wish to consider a body lift or tummy tuck.

The advancement of our Liposuction techniques makes the operation versatile in terms of the ideal candidate. We can also offer Liposuction for smaller body types or those who are looking to define and sculpt their body shape.

After VASER Liposuction, the results will be immediate that gradually improve over 1-2 months. You may experience swelling during recovery, therefore you should start to get more of an indication of your result at around three months post-op. It can take up to a year to have a final indication of your new shape.

Recovery varies from patient to patient, but with all liposuction methods, the minimal recovery time will be several days to two weeks, and you should expect bruising, swelling and soreness during this time. These side effects might persist up for up to 6 weeks if the operation was extensive.

Smart lipo and Vaser lipo offer faster recovery rates than traditional liposuction. Vaser lipo can provide the quickest recovery rates. Most patients will find that they can be up and about after a couple of days and can resume light exercise. Recovery can take longer for traditional liposuction.

The duration of the operation will depend on the technique and the amount of fat removal.

The fat removed will be permanently eradicated; however, weight gain is still possible. Therefore, we advise patients to be as close to their ideal weight as possible before having the operation.

Studies have found that with a sculpting technique or VASER Lipo, the fat will not return and instead, will distribute to other areas of the body.

Small incisions (a few millimetres) are in discreet locations. Still, any type of scarring will often be minimal, depending on the patient’s skin type and other influences that may inhibit healing.

Liposuction may be able to improve the appearance of cellulite in suitable patients. Liposuction can reduce the fat easily, however, it’s not the best solution for cellulite as it could make the dimpling appearance of the skin more obvious. There are other better options to reduce cellulite such as Endermologie, Accent Prime or Mesotherapy.

    Side effects of liposuction include:

    • Unwanted lumps and bumps or an uneven appearance. You can minimise risk by selecting a highly qualified and skilled surgeon.
    • Anaesthesia risks
    • Bleeding
    • Hematoma and seroma
    • Bruising
    • Necrosis
    • Fat clots
    • DVT
    • Damages to nerves, muscles, blood vessels and organs, and changes in skin sensation
    • Sagging skin
    • Asymmetry
    • Scarring or discolouration of the skin
    • Cardiac or pulmonary issues

    Types of Liposuction

    Vaser Liposuction

Vaser liposuction utilises a system that enables fat to be precisely targeted. Using sound energy instead of heat to break up pockets of stubborn fat, this method operates much closer to the muscles than other liposuction techniques for optimal precision and contouring.

Vaser liposuction is less invasive than traditional liposuction methods, with less downtime, yet more effective than non-invasive laser liposuction. Many surgeons prefer Vaser liposuction in contrast to other methods of fat removal, due to its superior sculpting results and ability to target fat cells without disrupting and damaging the surrounding tissues.

It is an ideal fat removal method for smaller areas such as the back of your arm. This procedure can be performed under local anaesthetic.

    Vaser High Definition

Vaser high definition liposuction strategically manipulates the fat surrounding the muscles to redefine them in areas where you may like to see more prominent muscle definition, such as the abs. Vaser high definition lipo is suitable for those who exercise strenuously but are struggling to shift a small layer of fat. The downtime is considerably less with this approach, in comparison to traditional liposuction.

    Traditional Liposuction

The traditional approach to liposuction may be adopted if the patient has a significant amount of fat. This method of liposuction uses a larger cannula which can result in more bruising and increased recovery time.

    Submental Liposuction

Submental liposuction is a minimally invasive day case procedure that reduces fat under the chin and redefines the lower face. It usually requires three small and well-concealed incisions that remain virtually undetectable to the naked eye.

I had 6 sessions of endormologie and could see results already after first session. Skin was smoother and less bloated post liposuction. I highly recommend Milena who was very helpful in choosing the right treatment and giving advise!

    Kasia

I had BBL surgery with 360 lipo in November (which I highly recommend by the way, Dr Yannis is a genius). After one week of feeling very sorry for myself, I finally went for my first LPG treatment (an intensive method of lymphatic drainage, and an alternative to the usual massage). Upon arrival, Rachael was so kind and welcoming and encouraging. I was still walking like an old lady, could hardly remove my garment, and still felt a little nauseous, but Rachael took immediate and wonderful care of me. She did an assessment, took me to their spa room, adjusted the temperature and lighting so that the atmosphere was calm and soothing, and she explained what we were going to do and how it was going to benefit my recovery. The treatment itself was sore at first, but only because I had a lot of bruising and swelling; as I got used to the feel of the LPG machine I could feel my body relax and give in. Rachael was such a lovely presence throughout and made me feel safe and cared for. After that first treatment, I was blown away at how I could stand and move and bend after a week of stiffness and discomfort from the liposuction. That sold me. I felt like I could breathe all of a sudden! And we both could see a visible reduction of the swelling. I decided then and there to do a treatment of 12 sessions, two a week for the foreseeable future. I am now on my 12th session and I cannot tell you what a difference it has made! My swelling is almost entirely gone, my skin has retracted beautifully, my waist continues to get smaller and my stomach is even starting to firm up. I honestly have looked forward to my sessions with Rachael every week. I always feel relaxed and rejuvenated after each one, and better able to move and flex. But importantly, Rachaels attention to detail, her professionalism, her thorough understanding of the human body, and her calm and kind demeanour have made my entire experience an absolute dream. I will be continuing the treatment once a month from now on, and will do so with pleasure!
