A Lip Lift is a minor cosmetic procedure to improve the appearance of the upper lip, making them look fuller with natural-looking results. It is also an operation that can also shorten the space between the nose and the lip, and elevate downturned mouth corners.

    Lip Lift FAQs

As we age, the philtrum (the space between the base of the nose and top of the upper lip) can elongate, giving the appearance of thinner and droopy lips.

A lip lift shortens the philtrum and depending on the approach; it can also elevate downturned mouth corners and allow for more teeth exposure and less gum show. In effect, this can also result in more upper pink lip show which can give the perceived effect of more lip volume.

Other approaches aim to address the lower lips to correct inwardly turned lips.

A lip lift is generally performed in-clinic under local anaesthetic and does not require a hospital stay.

We will discuss your aesthetic goals and desired outcome before the procedure. Several approaches can be adopted when performing a lip lift to suit your needs and enhance the shape, size, position and symmetry of the lips. Most often, an upper lip lift lifts the central area of the upper lip and the corners of the mouth laterally.

We remove the sutures after one week.

A good candidate for a Lip Lift would be:

    • A long philtrum
    • Flat-looking lips
    • Lips that appear inverted
    • Lips that look unbalanced
    • Thin upper lips
    • Downturned mouth corners
    • Little teeth show when you smile

Or, other good Lip Lift would be:

    • Those who find Lip Fillers aren’t giving you the results you want
    • You don’t have the desired shape of the lips that you’d like

The results can be seen almost immediately after the operation. However, you should expect some swelling and bruising for the first week or so. The final outcome should be visible around 2-3 weeks after the surgery.

The recovery for a lip lift is around one week. There is usually little to no bruising, and swelling lasts around 3-10 days.

The lips are likely to ache for the first few days following the procedure and can be tender for several weeks.

A lip lift procedure usually takes approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete.

A lip lift is a low-risk surgery that doesn’t require general anaesthetic. We can use a local anaesthesia to numb the area and minimise discomfort. Swelling, bruising, redness, asymmetry in contour and recurrence of scarring can occur; however, these symptoms usually disappear within time. The extent of the scarring depends on your skin type and your healing. Poor healing of the skin is most likely to affect smokers or patients with darker skin.

The location and visibility of the scar depend on the surgical technique.

Incisions are made at the base of the nose and sometimes at the top of the lip for an upper lip lift. The discreetly placed scar should eventually fade until it is barely noticeable to the naked eye.

The upper lip lift can help to roll out the pink flesh while shortening the gap between the nose and the lips, creating a natural enhancement to their size and shape.

Fillers add fullness to the lips which can improve their shape, but do not offer permanency and can become costly over time.

While the lip lift is more invasive than fillers with more downtime and a little scarring, you won’t need to repeat the appointments. It can, therefore, be a more cost-effective solution for some patients who have to return for filler top-ups every few months.

Lip fillers generally work better for those who already have reasonably sized lips as they can be used to redefine the shape and volume.

Generally, a Lip Lift cannot be reversed as it’s a surgical procedure that involves removing skin from the upper lip.

Of course, if you dislike your Lip Lift results, there are ways to improve the appearance of them and our Surgical Team will be able to help you.

When looking for a Lip Lift surgeon – or one to perform any surgery – be sure to look for the following:

    • Check reviews using independent platforms such as Google, Trustpilot, RealSelf or Doctify to understand previous patients’ experiences.
    • Check the medical professional is licensed – you can independently verify this via the relevant regulatory bodies such as the GMC, NMC or GDC.
    • Check the CQC website – CQC independently regulate healthcare businesses in England and provide a benchmark for good medical practice.
    • Social media as shouldn’t never be your only port-of-call when researching medical professionals, but can be useful in helping understand more about their expertise and specialisms, and may give you an insight into patient journeys.
    • Where relevant – and this particularly applies in the Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics field we operate within – look at before and after photos to see the results the medical professional has previously achieved. With patient permission, we share these on our website, in our clinic and across our social media channels, however we also encourage patients to share their own photos independently on platforms such as RealSelf.

A Botox Lip Lift is actually called a Botox Lip Flip, which works to inhibit the movement of the orbicularis oris muscle. When this happens, this causes your lip to ‘flip’ and roll subtly upwards, showing more of the upper lip and making them appear fuller and larger.

You can definitely combine a Lip Lift with a Lip Flip to give you more of a transformation.

    How to Shorten Your Philtrum

    UPPER LIP LIFT

The surgeon will make a small incision along the natural crease below your nose and remove a bullhorn shape of tissue (what we call the ‘bullhorn lip lift’). Following this, the surgeon will lift the skin and stitch it into place using fine sutures to support healing and minimise scarring. You will have a follow-up appointment to remove the stitches 7-10 days after surgery.

    LOWER LIP LIFT

A lower lip lift can involve a V-Y plasty technique (which we can also perform on the upper lip) to improve the ageing appearance, and for the treatment of a gummy smile. The surgeon will make a V-shaped incision and will perform some minor muscle tightening and rearrangement of the tissues.

    CORNER LIFT

A corner lift addresses the downturned corners of the mouth that create an unhappy-looking appearance. The surgeon will conceal the incisions within the outer edge of the mouth, making them virtually undetectable. In some cases, the procedure is internal and will involve dividing a small muscle to release the depressor anguli oris (the muscle responsible for pulling down the mouth corners).
