Depending on your treatment plan, the filler may be placed using a fine needle or cannula. The product may contain lidocaine, and topical numbing cream can also be applied to improve comfort.

Tear trough filler may be suitable if you have:

• Realistic expectations about temporary results
• Healthy skin around the treatment area

Tear trough filler may be less suitable if your concern is mainly caused by:

• Prominent under-eye fat bags
• Significant loose or excess skin
• Fluid retention or persistent swelling
• Predominantly pigmented dark circles
• Vascular dark circles
• An active skin infection

In these cases, your practitioner may discuss alternatives such as skin treatment, laser treatment or blepharoplasty.

Tear trough filler works by restoring volume beneath the under-eye hollow and smoothing the transition between the lower eyelid and cheek. Hyaluronic acid attracts water and supports hydration, helping to reduce the depth of the groove and the shadow it creates.

An initial improvement is usually visible immediately after treatment. Mild swelling or bruising can temporarily affect the appearance, so the final result is better assessed once these effects have settled, usually within one to two weeks.

Tear trough filler results typically last around six to twelve months, although this varies according to the filler used, the amount placed, your metabolism and individual anatomy. Maintenance or top-up treatment should only be considered after the result has been reviewed by your practitioner.

One treatment should suffice, but you may desire to have a top-up after a couple of weeks.

Tear trough fillers take approximately 20 minutes.

Most patients can return to normal daily activities after tear trough filler treatment. Mild swelling, bruising, redness or tenderness may occur and usually improves within several days, although it can occasionally last up to one week.

Your practitioner will provide personalised aftercare instructions. These may include avoiding strenuous exercise, excessive heat, alcohol and pressure around the treated area for a short period after treatment.

  Vascular occlusion is a rare but serious complication that occurs if filler enters or compresses a blood vessel. It can cause skin damage and, in extremely rare cases, visual impairment or blindness. For this reason, tear trough filler should only be performed by an appropriately qualified and experienced medical practitioner.
