Cellulite is a common concern that affects up to 90% of women. It’s completely normal, and we encourage you to embrace. Nonetheless, it can still affect confidence and self-esteem. Cellulite occurs due to a subcutaneous layer of fat that sits under the skin and on top of that is the fascia layer which overlies the muscle. The fat cells increase in size, which pushes the fat through the connective tissue creating a dimple or ‘orange-peel’ effect.

    What Are The Symptoms?

Cellulite can affect many parts of the body, but it is most frequently seen on the buttocks, thighs, and arms. As the fat pushes up through the skin’s connective tissues, it creates a dimply, lumpy or pulled-in appearance and uneven surface.

    Who It Can Affect

One of the most common cellulite myths is that it only affects overweight people or those who do not exercise regularly or follow a healthy diet. However, most women will have a degree of cellulite, and it can form regardless of their shape, size or fitness levels. Even the thinnest and fittest women can develop cellulite.

As elasticity diminishes with age, and the dermis thins, cellulite can worsen.

Cellulite seemingly only affects women due to their fat and skin composition, which varies to men. Many studies prove that women have less collagen and 65% weaker collagen anchors than men. These anchors help to keep the skin taut and make it more difficult for pockets of fat to protrude through the pockets. Women have larger fat lobules that cause more tension on the skin and weaken the structural support that keeps cellulite at bay.

Hormones also have a damaging effect on the skin, as oestrogen influences fat physiology, cellulite can push through. Oestrogen levels increase when using contraception, through puberty or when pregnant.

    Causes

As a loss of elasticity can weaken the skin and bring cellulite to the surface, lifestyle can play a role in how visible cellulite becomes. The amount of elasticity someone has in their skin is somewhat due to natural ageing (as elastin depletes with age). Still, lifestyle factors and external forces also contribute to this breakdown. Therefore, while poor diet and a lack of exercise don’t cause cellulite, it can make it more prominent.

Genetics also, unfortunately, predetermine the likelihood of developing cellulite. DNA makeup can play a part in how fat deposits on the body, making us more likely to develop a body shape that is similar to our parents.

Increasing levels of oestrogen within the body can also prompt the growth of fat. One of the reasons why women are so prone to cellulite is due to the variations in oestrogen levels that change when taking the contraceptive pill, or during the menstrual cycle or when pregnant. As these fat compartments enlarge, it puts more stress on the surface of the skin, allowing cellulite to persist.

    Treatment Options

With elasticity depletion and sluggish circulation, cellulite can become more apparent. To treat cellulite effectively, you should focus on improving circulation and boosting your elasticity levels through conscious awareness of lifestyle choices (smoking, drinking and poor diet all contribute to breaking connective tissue fibres). Certain skin care products can also improve the quality of the skin, and so we recommend a combination approach of treatment, ongoing product use and manual circulation boosting.

    Accent Prime

    Accent Prime HD

Combining radiofrequency and ultrasound, Accent Prime HD simultaneously firms and tightens the skin and reduces fat cells to improve the skin’s dimply appearance. The treatment can support the growth of the skin’s pliability protein to smooth the skin over time.

Your treatment programme will begin with a consultation where one of our highly experienced aestheticians will determine your suitability for treatment and discuss what the programme involves, as well as your treatment goals.

The handpiece used will depend on the size of the areas that require treatment. Larger areas such as the stomach, thighs and buttocks require a larger handpiece. The aesthetician will place lubrication on the treatment area and will perform several passes over the area with the smooth plate.

The results can be visible after just one treatment, but we recommend a course of 4-6 treatments for optimal results. Results vary from patient to patient, but we recommend a ‘booster session’ every six months to continually improve the results.

Accent uses radiofrequency, delivering a thermal shock within the tissue – this causes the skin to contract, simultaneously promoting the growth of new collagen for firmer and tighter skin.

Additionally, ultrasound targets fat cells and disrupts them through shear wave vibrations. This process causes the fat cell membranes to break down, leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed, while the fat cells are removed through the lymphatic system. Metabolism increases following fat destruction.

We recommend 4-6 treatments to see optimal results. Every 1-2 weeks.

    LPG Endermologie

    Endermologie

A powerful way to reduce the appearance of cellulite is through boosting circulation. Endermologie gives a deep and powerful massage in troublesome areas like the thighs, stomach and arms. It also strengthens the support tissues of the skin making fat deposits less able to poke through.

If you’re having the treatment on your body, we will require you to purchase your own Endermologie suit before treatment. You must wash this suit at home and bring it with you to every session.

During the treatment, we will roll the device over the treatment area. The device sucks the skin, as the roller massages the tissue.

Improvement in skin radiance can be seen immediately after a treatment, with improved hydration. Depending on your specific skin concerns, you should expect to see improvement following a course of treatments.

Approximately 50 minutes depending on the treatment area.

8–10 initially, and once a month after completion of the course. Initially, several treatments can be had on a weekly basis, or once or twice a week. After the initial course, monthly treatments will help to maintain results.

    Thermage Body

    Thermage FLX

Thermage FLX can improve the look of cellulite by using radiofrequency technology. It’s an FDA-approved treatment that can boost your circulation and increase your collagen levels to firm the skin and make it appear smoother.

The Thermage® FLX treatment starts with a consultation. At this point, we will determine whether the treatment will be suitable for your needs and desired goals.

Your aesthetician will trace a grid on to the skin, which helps to guide the application. The aesthetician will then make several passes over the treatment area with the handpiece in pulses which last for around half a second until the treatment is complete.

We also offer Thermage® CPT should you desire.

The consultation process plays an integral part in the overall outcome. At this point, we will discuss your expectations and what you’re hoping to achieve. Your age, the number of areas being treated and skin quality can influence the result and when the results will be seen.

You may see some immediate lifting, but the results of this treatment are usually progressive, with optimal improvement at around the six-month mark and improved when combined with other treatments and skincare. As the treatment works by stimulating collagen levels, the results continue to improve over time.

The results can last for one to three years, varying from patient to patient. Avoiding smoking, drinking, sun exposure and poor lifestyle habits will also prevent accelerated depletion of collagen and elasticity levels.

With sun damage a great contributor, our collagen levels begin to decrease. Elastin fibres, which give skin its stretch, also wear down and break over time. This causes accelerated ageing, that presents itself in the form of early jowls, crepiness of the skin on the face and the body, and lower facial sagging.

Thermage® FLX and Thermage® CPT uses radiofrequency energy, delivering it deep within the dermis to remodel existing collagen and elasticity, simultaneously inducing the production of new collagen which gives a tightening and plumping effect on the treated area.

Just a single session, but we recommend yearly treatments to maintain results.

    Meostherapy

    Mesotherapy

By infusing the skin with essential antioxidants, the injectable treatment can support the synthesis of collagen and elastin production and improve your overall skin health. The micro-injections can also break up fat deposits.

Mesotherapy is an injectable treatment that delivers a custom combination of skin-enhancing ingredients to your complexion.

During your consultation, we will discuss your skin concerns to determine which formulation the nurse will administer through your Mesotherapy treatment. It will usually contain a blend of hyaluronic acid, vitamins and amino acids.

Before your treatment, we may apply a topical numbing cream to your skin.

Through a series of fine injections, a bespoke blend of peptides, growth factors and antioxidants are delivered into the mesoderm (the middle layer of the skin) from between 1-4mm beneath your skin to improve skin quality and function.

This treatment takes approximately 30 minutes – 1 hour.

The skin’s barrier function plays a vital role in protecting your skin from environmental aggressors such as pollutants, UV damage and irritants. When working optimally, your skin counteracts the harmful free radical damage that scavenges your healthy skin cells. However, with natural ageing, sun damage and other external forces, your skin cell barrier function weakens.

Lipids made up of cholesterol, ceramides, and fatty acid form the barrier to prevent microrganisms and irritants entering the skin and protect it from Transepidermal water loss. When the skin barrier is weak, the skin can become dry, irritated and inflamed.

Mesotherapy is one way to encourage the restoration of your skin cell barrier function and restore your natural moisturising factors, to help bring your skin back to optimal health.

With over 60 different ingredient combinations, we can adapt the Mesotherapy to your skin’s needs. With an efficient transportation system and a surge in skin-loving ingredients, skin cell function improves, and the skin repair barrier becomes more resilient to environmental aggressors and other ageing factors.

Generally, a patient will need around ten sessions to see optimal results. The number of treatments required will vary from patient to patient, depending on the patient’s skin concerns.

These sessions are usually weekly for the first month, every two weeks over the second month, and sporadically from then onwards depending on how your skin responds to treatment.
