    Dry Or Dehydrated Skin

Our body is made up of around 75% water when we are born. The skin retains around 30% of that water, but this ability to retain hydration can diminish with age and other extrinsic causes.

These factors can break down the hydrolipidic film that protects and defends our skin from bacteria that helps the skin to retain its natural moisturising factor and lipids to give the skin its suppleness. When this barrier becomes stripped of its essential oils, the barrier can break down, causing dry skin.

There is a difference between dehydrated skin and dry skin. Dehydrated skin is a concern that is usually caused by our influences, and it is therefore temporary and relatively simple to resolve. Lifestyle factors such as harsh chemical use, poor diet, caffeine and alcohol consumption, and external factors such as weather, ageing, and sun damage can all contribute to dry skin. If the causes are not identified, dehydrated skin may manifest into a dry skin condition, which is a skin type.

    What dry skin looks like

    dry or dehydrated skin

People prone to dry skin may find that their makeup becomes patchy in areas. The skin might feel tight, itchy and taut. Blackheads and spots can still be a problem for people with dry skin, although their overall complexion may be ashen or dull.

Dry skin may age the face since wrinkles can become more prominent if the skin is less hydrated. Dry skin is a skin type, unlike dehydrated skin, so it’s an ongoing condition, requiring continuous treatment to manage it.

Although the skin may be producing enough oil, sometimes this is not enough to keep the skin moisturised. In this instance, you could have dehydrated skin and this can become dry skin – as a condition – when it begins to feel flaky, red, sensitive and itchy.

Why do I get dry skin?

Dry and dehydrated skin can affect anyone, but we increase the chances of developing dry skin through sun exposure, drinking alcohol, poor diet, using synthetic and using harsh ingredients and other external influences. These factors break down the skin’s reparative barrier that keeps our skin hydrated. Those with paler skin will also be more likely to have thinner skin which is more susceptible to dryness, sensitivity and irritation.

Causes of dry and dehydrated skin

When we’re caring for our skin, sometimes we can cause more harm than good.

    • Exfoliating with abrasive scrubs or using harsh acids can sometimes cause skin irritation and disturb that natural moisturising processes, making the skin dry and inflamed. Instead, you should opt for an AHA exfoliator, which dissolves dead skin cells and exfoliates the skin through acids.
    • Other irritants could include fragranced ingredients, rich ingredients, fake tan use and using other synthetic ingredients or harsh chemicals, not taking your makeup off properly, and medications (steroid creams) etc.
    • Hot weather can make your skin sore, red and sunburned and requires hydration, just like cold weather. In colder weather, the air is drier and can draw the moisture from your skin. The result is dry, flaky and irritated skin.
    • Ageing is one of the leading causes of dry skin, whether that is premature or extrinsic ageing. Naturally, the skin’s ability to produce hyaluronic acid decreases over time, as does the activity of the sebaceous glands and their ability to secrete oil. Blood flow to the skin will also decline, causing a drop in sebum production.
    • Lifestyle choices such as drinking alcohol, caffeine and smoking not only damage the skin’s protective barrier causing premature ageing and dehydrating your body and your skin.
    • Poor diet and stress can also implicate the effectiveness of your skin’s protective properties, as the stress hormone (which can also be released through overeating refined sugar) can slow down the skin’s healing processes.

Answering More Questions on Dry Skin

Dry skin may not cause acne but depending on your skin type it could trigger spontaneous breakouts. When your lipid barrier becomes dry, it will react by prompting the skin to produce more sebum to keep the epidermis moisturised, and for normal skin types this is enough to ensure you don’t experience too much dryness. For dry skin types, there is a lack of oil-producing activities, so a heavier but gentle moisturiser is recommended to avoid the unpleasant effects of dryness, like tightness.

However, if you have acne-prone skin and are experiencing dryness, your skin may overcompensate by producing more sebum, and for acneic skin – which is already producing too much oil – this can cause acne to worsen.

So, the short answer is no, but it could make pre-existing acne worse.

Yes. Itchiness is a common sign of dry skin.

Dry skin can heal on it’s own, but some personal intervention is needed – meaning you may have to limit how many showers or baths you have to avoid drying out the skin further, and always wear rubber gloves when washing up or cleaning.

Investing in a humidifier can help, especially in the months where there is less water in the air.

If your skin is persistently dry, but only in certain areas, this can be a sign of psoriasis or an allergic reaction to something you’ve newly introduced into your daily habits: such as a new skincare product or washing detergent.

Dry skin can go away on its own and many people have temporary flares of dry skin, however, if you experience it persistently it could be a sign that dry skin is your skin type – just like how some patients have oily, normal, combination or sensitive skin types…

This may mean vigilant skin care practices are needed to help alleviate the effects of it.

Dry skin around the nose can be common as it is an area that produces a lot of excess sebum, is touched a lot, and can be a place where bacteria and pollen gathers. All these factors can be worsened by a bout of dryness and can cause flakiness, redness, itchiness and more – which can all be a sign of dry skin.

So, to reduce dry skin around the nose:

    • Avoid touching or roughly blowing your nose
    • Use a decent moisturiser – if you have acne-prone combined with dry skin, a light non-comedogenic day cream may help relieve the dryness.
    • Wash you face daily with a very gentle cleanser, we recommend 111SKIN’s new Exfoliating Enzyme Cleanser which leaves the skin feeling soft and not stripped or tight.
    • Protect your face with a scarf during colder months as temperature fluctuations are another common cause of dry skin around the nose.

Depending on the re-occurrence and severeness of your dry skin, the best way for us to determine which treatment is right for you is by having a consultation with you and assessing your skin.

Some common dry skin treatments would be:

Injectable moisturising treatments like Mesotherapy, Profhilo, Exosomes, 111GlassSkin or Volite. Topical treatments like our facials can help to flood your skin with moisture.

Often, for severe dryness a treatment plan combining both injectable and topical treatments can be most effective.

111SKIN’s Repair Serum NAC Y², combined with a few drops of the Hyaluronic Acid Aqua Booster will work wonders for dry skin.

    Treatments for Dry Skin

Dry and dehydrated skin can present itself in several ways like dullness, flaky skin and sensitivity. When the skin is unable to seal in moisture, it becomes easier for irritants and bacteria to interfere with the skin, and the repair barrier becomes compromised. As a result, ongoing treatment may be required to not only nourish and hydrate, but also to restore the skin’s protective barrier to encourage your skin to function more efficiently.

    Mesotherapy

    Mesotherapy

When the skin’s repair barrier is broken down, it can allow irritants into the skin, providing more opportunities for further damage and premature ageing. One way to help rebuild the skin’s protective barrier is to restore its hydration and antioxidant levels.

Mesotherapy involves injecting the skin with an infusion of hyaluronic acid and vitamins that are essential for moisturisation, to restore your skin’s protective barrier, as well as replenish lost moisture and hydration within the skin.

Mesotherapy is an injectable treatment that delivers a custom combination of skin-enhancing ingredients to your complexion.

During your consultation, we will discuss your skin concerns to determine which formulation the nurse will administer through your Mesotherapy treatment. It will usually contain a blend of hyaluronic acid, vitamins and amino acids.

Before your treatment, we may apply a topical numbing cream to your skin.

Through a series of fine injections, a bespoke blend of peptides, growth factors and antioxidants are delivered into the mesoderm (the middle layer of the skin) from between 1-4mm beneath your skin to improve skin quality and function.

This treatment takes approximately 30 minutes – 1 hour.

The skin’s barrier function plays a vital role in protecting your skin from environmental aggressors such as pollutants, UV damage and irritants. When working optimally, your skin counteracts the harmful free radical damage that scavenges your healthy skin cells. However, with natural ageing, sun damage and other external forces, your skin cell barrier function weakens.

Lipids made up of cholesterol, ceramides, and fatty acid form the barrier to prevent microrganisms and irritants entering the skin and protect it from Transepidermal water loss. When the skin barrier is weak, the skin can become dry, irritated and inflamed.

Mesotherapy is one way to encourage the restoration of your skin cell barrier function and restore your natural moisturising factors, to help bring your skin back to optimal health.

With over 60 different ingredient combinations, we can adapt the Mesotherapy to your skin’s needs. With an efficient transportation system and a surge in skin-loving ingredients, skin cell function improves, and the skin repair barrier becomes more resilient to environmental aggressors and other ageing factors.

Generally, a patient will need around ten sessions to see optimal results. The number of treatments required will vary from patient to patient, depending on the patient’s skin concerns.

These sessions are usually weekly for the first month, every two weeks over the second month, and sporadically from then onwards depending on how your skin responds to treatment.

    Meostherapy Volite

    Volite

Though one of the most beneficial ingredients for hydrating the skin is hyaluronic acid, the skin has difficulty retaining it when applied topically since for it to be absorbed; the hyaluronic acid must be low molecular weight.

Through Juverderm’s Vycross®technology, Volite injections can ensure hyaluronic acid is delivered to both the epidermis and the dermis to restore your moisture levels from the inside out. The injectable was explicitly designed to improve the skin’s quality through hydrating, smoothing and increasing the elasticity of the skin.

The treatment uses vycross technology that binds the hyaluronic acid, giving it greater malleability and a more natural appearance than dermal fillers.

Hyaluronic acid needs to maintain a very low molecular weight in order to be able to efficiently penetrate the dermis, and unfortunately, this is very hard to track within topical skincare. With so much uncertainty over how deep the hyaluronic acid can actually penetrate the skin topically, it’s more effective to inject it.

You can expect to see results within 1-2 weeks.

Phototherapy can alter biological activity to encourage skin cells to improve their performance and efficiency- this process can promote the body’s healing mechanisms to speed up tissue repair and fortify the skin’s epidermal barrier. In turn, this can improve inflammatory skin conditions (and their symptoms) like psoriasis and dermatitis.

LED light therapy can also kill acne bacteria to help reduce acne, while fibroblast activity synthesises collagen production to improve acne scars (and other wounds) and skin texture.

I have been returning here for my treatments every 2 – 3 weeks. I came here because I just really wanted to change my skin and for once in my life have dewy complexion. My skin has completely transformed. I have moved away from having sensitive, prone to breakouts skin, redness and dryness to a more thicker, dewy and visibly healthier skin. My products and make up go on really well. People actually comment on my skin now and say how nice it is, this isn’t something I ever thought would be possible for me. So happy, recommended many of my friends . All thanks to amazing Samia and the beautiful clinic she operates from.

I had lip fillers and volite with nurse Bianca. I’m a very nervous patient as I never volite done before. It was recommended to me as I have dry dehydrated skin that made me look dull. Bianca was awesome, she made me feel super comfortable and talked me through the whole process. She works efficiently and the treatment was not what I imagined at all.. super easy and my lips also look great, very natural and hydrated looking. Will definitely be coming back for my next treatment in 6 months and I’m not nervous at all about coming back!
