    How Blepharoplasty Works

    Blepharoplasty FAQ’s

There are many approaches to performing a blepharoplasty surgery that will depend on your concerns, ethnicity and eye shape.

The surgery may involve working on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids and eyelid muscles to correct drooping, creases, eye bags and improve functionality.

The procedure varies from patient to patient, depending on their preferences and the complexity of the concern. The type of anaesthesia used will depend on your preferences, suitability and the preferred surgical technique. We can perform both an upper and lower blepharoplasty under local anaesthesia in our safe and sterile clinic, reducing the anaesthesia risks. A blepharoplasty is often a day case surgery.

The surgery technique will depend on the concerns. The surgeon will usually make an incision along the lash line for a lower bleph, and within the crease of the upper eyelid for an upper bleph. They will remove excess skin, and excise some of the muscle, and may reposition the fat and tissues.

    Those who:

    • Are looking for more rested, youthful-looking eyes
    • Have sagging or excess skin on upper eyelids
    • Have under-eye bags or fluid accumulation under eyes
    • Chinese or Asian patients who are looking to alter their eye shape through the double-eyelid approach
    • Vision is effected by sagging upper eyelids
    • Have unwanted creases around eyes

You can start to get an indication of the outcome after several weeks.

The recovery period depends on the severity of the operation requirements. For a traditional blepharoplasty, the surgeon will usually remove stitches five to seven days after surgery, and you may resume normal activities after this. We tend to use dissolvable stitches when performing a lower blepharoplasty, in which case, you wouldn’t require the removal of stitches. The majority of patients feel ready to go out in public after around ten days.

The operation usually takes up to two hours to complete.

Blepharoplasty will not directly remove dark circles as dark circles are caused by pigmentation. If you have puffy or wrinkled under-eyes, however, a Blepharoplasty works to target them. Generally, a Blepharoplasty may help to improve the appearance of dark circles, but it is not the first treatment we would recommend.

Our first choice as a treatment for dark circles would be Ameela. This is an under-eye injectable that works to immediately brighten the eyes, stimulate collagen as well as protect the skin against free radicals and more.

With that said, an optimal procedure can provide long-lasting results. With ageing (and other external forces) the skin around the eyes and its support structure will eventually weaken, and the results may subtly diminish over time.

Having a Blepharoplasty has a transformative effect on your face and facial aesthetics. Even though it is a minor procedure, it can really change how your face looks. For example, see our patient below:

See how a Blepharopalsty has awakened her face and even changed how her nose looks.

A Bleharoplasty can help soften under-eye wrinkles as it works to remove the excess skin – which is especially effective in reducing crepey eyelid skin.

It’s best to avoid wearing eye makeup until your eyes have fully healed, as wearing mascara often means you have to rub your eyes to remove it, this can disturb the stitches and may cause infection if the product is old Face makeup is fine to wear but always check with our Surgical Team as they will be able to advise you further.

Usually stitches are removed 9-14 days after surgery, however, this can be longer depending on how fast your skin heals.

Depending on the technique too, some incisions are made within the lower eyelid which means no stitches are needed to be removed as they will be naturally dissolved by the body.

This is called (informally) a no scar Blepharoplasty and the medical name is transconjunctival Blepharoplasty.

Yes! Blepharoplasty, as a stand-alone procedure, can be performed under local. However, when combined with another more invasive procedure like Facelift, it will be performed under general anaesthetic.

Common side effects include swelling and redness, which usually resolves within a few weeks. The rate of recovery and side effects vary from patient to patient. Your surgeon may recommend eye ointment to keep your eyes protected and encourage healing during this time.

    Other side effects may include:

    • Bruising and redness; 1 to 3 weeks
    • Dry and irritated eyes and puffy eyelids
    • Difficulty closing eyelids
    • Infection and bleeding
    • Keloid or visible scarring
    • Eye muscle damage
    • Impaired vision, in rare cases loss of eyesight
    • Asymmetry and over-correction

Types of Blepharoplasty & Under Eye Bag Removal Approaches

    Upper Eyelid Surgery

An upper blepharoplasty addresses signs of ageing around the eye area such as sagging or hooded eyelids. Excess skin on the upper eyelids doesn’t just affect the appearance but can also inhibit the peripheral vision. In removing the sagging skin, your eyesight may improve.

Additionally, the operation can correct genetically attributed hooded eyelids.

There’s also the browpexy that can improve both the brow and upper eye area by correcting sagging of the upper brow and eyelids. We can combine surgical operations to create the most aesthetically-pleasing eye and brow shape.

During an upper blepharoplasty, the surgeon will make an incision along the natural crease line that occurs above the eyelashes. The incisions may extend into the crow’s feet or laughter lines at the outer corners of the eyes. Fat, excess muscle and sagging skin is then removed. Once the surgeon is happy with the new positioning of the upper eyelid, the incisions are closed.

    Lower Eyelid Surgery

A lower blepharoplasty reduces under-eye bags and puffiness or fluid build up that can form below your eyes for a multitude of reasons.

The lower eyelid can face several aesthetic issues and so the surgeon will alter the approach depending on the concerns the under-eye faces. The incision is usually just below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid. The surgeon will then reposition the muscles and remove fat from the under-eye area. They will also tighten loose skin.

    Double Eyelid Surgery

Other patients may seek to improve their upper eye appearance for ethnic preference. For example, ‘double eyelid surgery’ is an in-demand technique (of which we have performed thousands) amongst our Asian patients. The double eyelid surgery is a specific approach that creates a natural-looking crease in the upper eyelid that is visible when the eyes open.

During the surgery, we create a new crease using an external incision or by applying a suture to part of the underlying structure of the eyelid like a blood vessel. The latter approach speeds up recovery and is less invasive. The surgeon may also address any excess skin, muscle and fat to improve the outcome.

    Non-Surgical Blepharoplasty

    The Botox Brow Lift

Heavy brows can cause the skin to hood over the upper eyelids. Using targeted injections of Botox, the eyebrows and excess skin can be slightly elevated to a more youthful-looking position.

    Soft Thread Lift

Using bioabsorbable threads, this injectable treatment can elevate the brows and eyes to create the coveted snatched-eye look. The treatment is customisable to the patient’s desires. For example, it could give a straighter brow, or cat-eye look or lift hooded eyelids.

In some cases, we may be able to treat your concerns non-surgically. In other circumstances, we may suggest combining the procedure with other operations such as a facelift, fat transfer or brow lift.

    iPixel

The Erbium laser delivers energy to the skin, causing it to retract, remodel and resurface. This laser treatment is great for addressing crepey skin on the upper and lower eyelids.

    Dermal Fillers

Dermal filler can be an option for tear troughs and improving the under eye area but doesn’t treat upper eyelid concerns. The filler can conceal areas in the upper cheek and lower eye to give a more lifted appearance. Through minimising tear troughs, darkness under the eyes lessens.
