What Is Baby Botox & Do I Need It?

Baby Botox is a term that describes the proactive measure in eliminating the onset of wrinkles and lines that occur around the eyes and forehead in younger patients. Previously, Botox was reserved as a treatment for women in their late thirties or forties with visible lines and wrinkles. However, with the widespread use and positive anti-ageing results, ”Baby Botox” became a technique that injectors used to treat emerging crow’s feet, horizontal forehead lines and vertical lines that patients may start to notice as young as our twenties.

Some patients opt for this method of injecting Botox as it uses a lower dosage, meaning that the patient can retain facial expressions.

Baby Botox also works as a preventative measure to minimise facial animation, smoothing wrinkles progressively over time and reducing the need for more invasive measures later in life.

    Baby Botox Case Study

One patient at 111 Harley St. has been visiting us since the age of 23. Though she’s considered a young patient, she had clear signs of premature ageing, namely static horizontal forehead lines. This meant that the lines were etched into the skin even when she was not making any form of facial expression.

She’s never smoked, so the leading causes behind this were excessive sun exposure, hyper-active forehead muscles and thin skin. As the patient had a small forehead, we started with a lower dosage using the method we call Baby Botox, and requested for her to return in a few weeks if she required more. It’s common practice to start with a lower dosage to avoid eyebrow or eyelid drooping.

The time in between each visit grew longer. The patient reported that as time progressed, she had noticed that she used the muscles less and less. This could theoretically be due to the interruption of muscle memory. With the muscles in a weakened state, the patient subconsciously used these muscles less frequently, to the point where even once the Botox had worn off, the muscles learned to relax more.

At a younger age, your skin retains its collagen and elastin levels keeping it firm, bouncy and supple. As these levels deplete with age and external damage, the skin also becomes thinner, and wrinkles become more pronounced. Over time, you continue to repeat the facial expressions, and with the quality of the skin degrading, these wrinkles become etched into our skin and settle there. The lines become visible at all times, even when we’re not making facial expressions. These lines are known as ‘static’ lines, and we commonly see these finely etched lines in women in their early twenties. However, if the lines only occur when you’re recruiting these muscles, these are known as ‘dynamic’ lines. Therefore, treatment on dynamic lines can help to prevent these lines from becoming static.

Who Is The Ideal Patient For Baby Botox?

The ideal candidate for Baby Botox would be starting to see the formation of faint lines and wrinkles. A small amount of Botox (the actual unit will vary from patient to patient) is administered to paralyse the muscles that are causing lines and wrinkles temporarily. With slightly older patients, we would expect to see more significant and deeper lines and wrinkles, and they may require more units than a younger patient.

We don’t advocate Botox if there are no visible signs of wrinkles or lines, as this could look unnatural, and is unnecessary.
