The Low Down On Chin Liposuction

While the primary cause is due to general body fat levels, ‘double chins’ can also be caused due to genetically predisposed stubborn fat, a weak bone structure (ie receding chin), posture, and even ageing (excess skin and fat can sink to the bottom of the jaw, creating a more prominent jowl and chin).

While facial exercises have become popular, there is little evidence to show their effect. Instead many patients are opting to ‘stretch out’ the area with cleverly injected jaw and chin fillers, elongating or widening the area to ‘draw out’ the appearance of a double chin.

In most cases, however, this is insufficient and Submental Liposuction is advised. There are a lot of different techniques that can be used when performing Submental Liposuction – including Laser Liposuction and Tumescent Liposuction.

This procedure is common in patients who have lost weight and are reaching their optimum BMI but struggling to shift the more stubborn fat of that area. The advantages also extend to the neck, giving the area a slightly tauter appearance.

Using the tumescent technique where the first step to injecting the fat in that area with fluid that can restrict the loss of blood. It makes the operation comfortable to be performed under local anaesthesia. During this procedure, I have two small entry points – one under the chin and one behind the ear, which allows me to cover the full area under the jaw and not just the area under the chin – This gives better definition and better skin contraction and creates a very nice border of the jawline.”

We encourage patients to stretch (mainly the neck area) and have a lymphatic drainage massage post-surgery to improve the results. While swelling can last up to 2-3 weeks, you can see results almost instantly. For best results, this will be seen 3-6 months after the procedure.
