Asian Rhinoplasty: All You Need To Know

WRITTEN BY ALICE | CONTENT APPROVED FOR MEDICAL ACCURACY BY DR YANNIS | UPDATED 2024/06/13

Would you be surprised to learn that a patient’s cultural background may alter the surgical technique used? This is often the case when performing an a Rhinoplasty on an Asian patient. Here’s what you need to know about an Asian Rhinoplasty and how it can differ to a regular Rhinoplasty.

    What is a Rhinoplasty?

The nose is structured into three main sections; the upper nose is made up of bone (nasal bone), and then we have the upper lateral cartilage and the lower lateral cartilage. A rhinoplasty can effectively change all three nose areas (skin, cartilage and bone). Both a non-surgical (see Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty here), open or closed surgery rhinoplasty can transform the nose.

Asian rhinoplasty considers the specific characteristics of Asian features to enhance them instead of restructuring the natural features. Still wanting to enhance and maintain overall features, there are particular techniques that our surgeons will consider specifically for Asian rhinoplasty.

    Asian Rhinoplasty versus Standard Rhinoplasty

While the fundamental procedure is the same – the altering of the cartilage, nasal bone and skin tissue – the process too is the same, where all our patients will first have to undergo a consultation beforehand, and will have their procedure performed under general anaesthesia during the surgery, and aftercare post-operation, there are subtle differences to be aware of.

As European faces share some similarities such as perhaps having a wide alar base but narrow nose bridge and small nasal tips, Asian faces are often known has having a flatter, less protruding nose bridge, restricted nasal projection, less cartilage, flared nostrils, and thicker skin, our specialists will perform open rhinoplasty surgery and consider cartilage grafting from the ear or rib to help structure the bridge and tip of the nose.

A small incision will be made at the base of the nose so that our surgeons can make precise alternations to the nasal structure while maintaining the natural beauty of the face and structure. You can find out more about Asian Rhinoplasty or Male Asian Rhinoplasty, through a bespoke consultation with our surgical experts.
