    Where Can Botox Be Injected?

WRITTEN BY ALICE | CONTENT APPROVED FOR MEDICAL ACCURACY BY DR YANNIS | UPDATED 2024/03/26

Botox is one of those treatments that’s so versatile in its applications and uses that ever since its approval for medical and aesthetic use, it’s dominated the industry. It has smoothed the world over, (and it’s wrinkles too).

According to the insight website Statista, it’s the most used injectable globally and is so renowned it even has its own holiday – National Botox Cosmetic Day, which you can celebrate on the November 20th. One of the reasons we think it has undeniably ruled the world of anti-wrinkle injections is because of the many places this prescription-only product can be injected. Keep reading to find out where…

    First, how does Botox work?

Botox is a neuromodulator, which essentially means it blocks nerve signals in the areas it is injected. Although commonly known as an anti-wrinkle injection, due to it’s power to inhibit the muscle movement, it has numerous further uses aside from making your skin look ageless.

Botox injections contain botulinum toxin, which when injected, temporarily blocks the chemical release of the primary neurotransmitter involved in muscle movement called acetylcholine. This relaxes the muscles, which has many medical benefits as well as skin-smoothening results.

In our clinic, Botox can also be used to treat medical conditions, such as migraines, teeth grinding and excessive sweating (called hyperhidrosis).

For hyperhidrosis, it is commonly injected in the hands, head, feet and armpits –on areas where there are eccrine glands – also known as sweat glands.

Aesthetically, Botox can be injected in the following places:

Most places in the face that can wrinkle or form groves. Common places are: the marionette or melomental folds, glabellar wrinkles, the mental crease (which is a horizontal fold beneath the chin), peri-oral and orbital lines, wrinkles on the nose, the deep horizontal lines on the forehead.

The neck wrinkles: it can also help to elongate the neck (this forms part of a treatment our Aesthetic Doctor has created called ‘Swan Neck’).

The jaw: this is called Masseter Botox – which, by relaxing the masseter muscle primarily involved in chewing, it gives a face-slimming effect.

The lips: When injected along in four points along the lip line, this causes the orbicularis oris muscle to ‘roll’ making the lips appear bigger. This can also help gum visibly protruding gums – treating gummy smiles.

The legs: Our newest treatment, called Hollywood Legs, works to reshape the lower legs, slimming the appearance of calves and alluding to the appearance of longer legs. This is great for overworked legs or people wanting to reduce the appearance of muscular calves.

The shoulders: This is a treatment that has took the internet by storm and is referred to as ‘Traptox’, or more recently, ‘Barbie Botox’.

The nose: Alongside treating wrinkles on the upper bridge of the nose (called bunny lines), Botox can also work to reshape the nose (especially when treated by our Aesthetic Doctor, Dr Ivy).

    Our Skincare Recommendation

Our top product recommendation, which has been heralded as ‘Botox in a bottle’, is 111SKIN’s Black Diamond Contour Gel which contains Agireline – pronounced arr-gerr-line. This is an advanced Hexapeptide that tightens skin to help lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and provide a lifting effect. It is also an ingredient related to a botulinum extract that inhibits muscle movement.

    Our Top Tips

x Don’t lay down immediately after your treatment, if you can, refrain from lying flat for 4 hours.

Don’t wear makeup for at least four hours also.

Avoid alcohol, aspirin, and vigorous exercise for 48 hours.

Avoid sunbathing and extreme heat and cold temperatures – so hold off on those saunas or ice baths for at least 10 days.

Avoid facials as you don’t want to massage the area you’ve just had Botox in as this can make it less effective.

✔  You can continue your skincare routine, just gently pat the face when cleansing. In the days following the treatment, 24-48hrs later, you can resume any gua-sha or more thorough massaging movements.

✔  It will usually take 7+ days for your Botox to fully settle with true results seen after approximately 2 weeks. Some people see the effects earlier/later.
