How An Otoplasty Can Improve Your Appearance

The word “oto” meaning ear and “plasty meaning to shape, refers to a surgical procedure known as an Otoplasty that helps to reshape your ears. To be more specific, it focuses on correcting protruding ears, large ears and congenital ear abnormalities: such as microtia, anotia, lop ears, cupped ears, shell ears or torn/ripped earlobes, and works to improve the ears overall appearance.

Ears have played a major role throughout history. Thousands of years ago, before people realised that ears were at the centre of our hearing and balance, ears were at the centre of many superstitions. At one point in time, it was believed that small ears can denote mental ability and generosity, while large ears indicate dullness, and pointed ears have a bad character. Can you just imagine how that would be perceived today?

Ears also made their mark in literature and art. The most famous piece of art depicting an ear is Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer’s portrait named “The Girl With The Pearl Earring”. So, ears have even become a form of art themselves by being adorned with jewels, silver, gold, gems and piercings throughout history (including today).

In the modern era, we are fully aware that our ears cannot predict the future. However, what we do know is that they do however play an important role anatomically and aesthetically. Making them still as visually important as ever: this is where Otoplasty comes in. Here are the most important things that you need to know before booking a consultation to reshape your ears.

How Otoplasty Can Repair (And Enhance) Your Ears

An Otoplasty procedure is a very common procedure with over 4,713 Otoplasties performed in the US in 2022.  In the UK, Otoplasties are on the rise. In 2022, there was a 72% increase in Otoplasty procedures performed in the United Kingdom compared to 2021.

However, Otoplasties go beyond mere visual appeal. The exterior part of your ear (also known as the pinna auricle) actually plays a role in the way you hear. It also protects your inner ear from dirt, debris, and water. When it comes to your earlobe, the earlobe itself does not necessarily contribute to your hearing but it is still an important part of the ear structure, helping to frame your ear canal. For these reasons, Ottoplasty should always be performed by an experienced surgeon – and luckily, our Founder and Plastic Surgeon, Dr Yannis Alexandrides can resolve this with an expert procedure.

    Ear Pinning

This type of Otoplasty is usually recommended if you have prominent ears that stick out. The goal of ear pinning is to bring your ears closer to the sides of your head and reshape malformed cartilage.

    Understanding The Procedure

An Otoplasty is a quick and safe procedure and in some cases, can be performed in our 111 Harley St. theatre under local anaesthesia, so there’s no need to book an overnight stay to have your ear exterior corrected.

Before we suggest or perform any procedure, you have to book a consultation with Dr Yannis. This allows him to thoroughly examine your ears, go through your medical history, and talk about your aesthetic goals. This way he can recommend the best procedure and explain all the ins and outs to you.

In regards to the surgery itself, a small incision is usually made behind your ear to expose the cartilage. This incision type means that the scar will be virtually undetectable, as it will be hidden within the natural crease behind your ear. We then proceed to reshape, remove/add and reposition your ears by moving small pieces of cartilage and stitching your ear position closer to your head. We will also require you to wear a full head bandage to support your ears in their new position for seven to ten days.

However, the overall recovery time is relatively short and the results will be well worth it.

The biggest benefit of this aesthetic surgery is that it improves the aesthetics of your ears and can potentially boost your self-esteem.
