An average areola is approximately 4.5cm in diameter. In instances the areola may be large in addition to sagging of breasts due to age or breast-feeding. If you desire a breast reduction or a breast lift, the areola may be reduced at the same time to the desired size. An areola reduction can also be performed without additional surgery.
The duration of the surgery depends of the type of anaesthesia and the technique used. Areola reduction surgery can be performed under local anaesthetic. The surgery takes approximately about two hours.
Through an incision in the outer part of the nipple, the pigmented skin around the nipple or areola is removed. The incisions are closed with sutures around the areola; which are pulled in, to tighten the skin around the areola.
An areola reduction should not cause any problems with future breast feeding.
You may notice some bruising around your areolas which is to be expected and should subside within ten to fourteen days after surgery.
Please note that in terms of results and expectations, there are numerous variables with every patient, each surgery and every recovery and healing period.
