Problem with Migraines

A migraine is a severe headache usually felt at the front or on one side of the head. About 15% of the UK population suffer from them and women tend to experience them more often than men.  There are three types of migraine. The first type is with aura. The aura usually signals the onset of this headache, and the warning signs include visual problems, stiff neck and limbs. Then there are those without aura and even those without a headache when all the other symptoms are present but no headache develops. Other symptoms can include nausea and sensitivity to light.

Migraines typically occur in younger adults, below the age of 40 and tend to be caused by chemical changes in the brain.  It is thought that a decrease in the levels of serotonin can cause these server headaches. Hormone levels can also cause migraines, and it should not come as a surprise that women often complain of experiencing them just before their period. These are known as menstrual migraines. Other lifestyle choices that can cause them to include diet, medication, emotional and physical problems. Stress and lack of sleep can also be critical triggers in the onset of migraines.
