What to expect during the procedure

Buccal Fat Removal is a relatively fast procedure, and is often performed under local anaesthetic. As buccal fat is the name of the facial fat that gathers between the cheekbone and jaw bone, the only way to remove it is through a small surgical procedure. An incision is made just between the back of your  teeth and in between the cheek and gum, creating an entry size that will be between 2-4cm.

The buccal fat is then gently encouraged out by the surgeon who will manually put pressure on the outside of the cheeks. Once the desired amount of fat is removed, the incision will be closed with non-dissolvable sutures. The technique may vary depending on the options discussed at your consultation.

Post-procedure

Post-surgery it is advised that you aim to keep your head elevated whilst you sleep for a period of two weeks. Patients are also required to consume a liquid diet for the first 24 hours after the buccal fat removal, and a soft food diet for the following five days.

It is fundamental to avoid any strenuous activity for several days, by which point the sutures will be removed. During your recovery process, you may experience bruising and swelling, however, this is normal and after three weeks, the majority of post-surgery implications will have improved.

Once you have made a full recovery from the Buccal Fat Removal procedure you can expect your face to look noticeably slimmer and more sculpted.
